Pettenasco lies halfway along the eastern shore of Lake Orta, and the earliest document naming it, from the ninth century, already mentions its mills. The statutes of 1433 required dogs to be shut indoors from August to October, so that the grapes stayed untouched in the vineyards. From the mid-nineteenth century several mills became water-driven turning shops: the gratagamul, the wood turners, produced objects sold all over Italy.

Of the old church of Sant'Audenzio only the Romanesque stone bell tower survives, set against the flank of the parish church of Santa Caterina, built in 1778, centuries later. Audenzio, in the legend of San Giulio, was a prefect who helped the saint preach there.
