Intragna

Province: Verbano-Cusio-Ossola · Region: Piedmont · Population: 107 · Postal code: 28816

Intragna is the least populated comune of the Verbano-Cusio-Ossola, clinging to the slope above Intra. The valley around it was long called Valle Intragna, while Intrasca, the name it carries today, once meant the present Val Grande, in whose national park some of its mountains lie. The name appears in a document of 1124, though people came far earlier: at Alpe Pechì, Alpe Steppia and the col of Pian Cavallone, cup-marked carvings attest a presence of three thousand years ago.

The parish church of San Giacomo Maggiore, in mid-village, goes back to the thirteenth century and was rebuilt in 1717. The comune has never adopted an official coat of arms: the one used in its communication was drawn by outsiders, quite independently of the administration, and shows on a green field two gold six-rayed stars set in bend sinister within a silver gemel.
