Feast of San Bartolomeo
📅 Every year, on 24 August
On 24 August Caprezzo, a municipality of 168 inhabitants in the province of Verbano-Cusio-Ossola, celebrates its patron San Bartolomeo.
Caprezzo lies in the Valle Intrasca, in the province of Verbano-Cusio-Ossola, and its whole territory falls inside the Val Grande National Park. It enters the records in 1125/1128, in a deed of the chapter archive of Intra, not for a privilege or a war but because one Pietro Spallador di Capricio owed eight denari and an amiscere, a due paid in kind. The name later ran through Capricium, Cavretium and Capretium, and the village stayed a Borromeo fief until the end of the eighteenth century.
The land gave wine, hemp, chestnuts and firewood, but not enough to live on: two thirds of the men were away most of the year, masons and cement workers in Lombardy, then Switzerland and France. The village streams drove the dairy mill that made butter. From San Bartolomeo a via crucis climbs to the Madonna del Sasso, a chapel raised on a vow after the plague of 1630. Baldassare Verazzi was born here, painter of the most representative canvas of the Five Days of Milan.
