Aurano

Province: Verbano-Cusio-Ossola · Region: Piedmont · Population: 103 · Postal code: 28812

Aurano lies in the upper Valle Intrasca, partly inside the Val Grande National Park. The name may come from an estate name in -anus built on the Roman name Laberius, or from Laberianus, which lost its i. For centuries the village answered to the pieve of San Vittore at Intra, within the Dagagna di San Martino, a fief of the Moriggia: the Statuta issued by Gian Galeazzo Visconti in 1393 bound Intra, Pallanza and the whole valley into one community.

Its houses cling to a rocky spur around the eighteenth-century parish church of San Matteo, raised on the remains of a building pulled down in 1712. In 1861 Aurano had 1093 inhabitants, mostly shepherds; today barely a hundred remain. The comune has not yet adopted an official coat of arms, and the one in circulation was drawn by outsiders.
