Bee

Province: Verbano-Cusio-Ossola · Region: Piedmont · Population: 729 · Postal code: 28813

Bée sits on a plateau above Lake Maggiore. A notarial deed of 1175 names a man called de Bee: the name was already in use. It has been supposed, without documentary proof, to come from the Latin beta, beetroot. From the late nineteenth century the village became a summer resort, and villas grew around the old core, among them the summer house of the German brewers Würer.

Santa Croce, the parish church, stands over the houses, an eighteenth-century building on the site of an oratory known from the sixteenth century; later work added two side aisles and the large entrance portico. The bell tower is of bare stone, with a clock below the bells.
