Feast of Saint Nicholas
📅 Every year, on 6 December
On 6 December Quarna Sotto celebrates its patron Saint Nicholas; the town is known for its old tradition of handcrafted wind instruments.
Quarna Sotto, on the mountains above Omegna, is called the village of music: it has made wind instruments for two centuries. Artisans trained in Milan brought the craft in the first half of the 19th century, and the Agostino Rampone firm, founded in 1818, still builds them by hand here.
The village gathers round its parish church, San Nicolao, enlarged in the 18th century over an older, undated sacred building; its organ of 1837, replacing the first, is by Luigi Maroni Biroldi of Varese. On via Varallo, the road to the pastures, stands the 17th-century oratory of the Saliente, frescoed in the early 19th century by Giovanni Avondo.
