Loreglia

Province: Verbano-Cusio-Ossola · Region: Piedmont · Population: 262 · Postal code: 28893

Loreglia (Luréia in the local dialect) opens the Strona valley and gathers, besides the main village, the hamlets of Chesio, Noseglio and Prelo. In 1927 a royal decree wiped out every small municipality in the valley at once, Loreglia among them, to make a single comune, Valstrona, with its seat at Strona di Luzzogno; after the war only three of those villages came back on their own, and Loreglia, with Chesio, was one of them.

The name of Chesio, formed towards the end of the Middle Ages, is traced to the German kase, cheese; its people are called taplagn, a nickname explained by the sound of the little bell of the old oratory. The village keeps the sixteenth-century church of San Rocco and Casa Gianoli of the same years, frescoed with family portraits, and long worked pewter and wood, even making razors. Loreglia's parish church is dedicated to Saint Gotthard.
