Feast of San Bartolomeo
📅 Every year, on 24 August
On 24 August Germagno, a municipality of 186 inhabitants in the province of Verbano-Cusio-Ossola, celebrates its patron San Bartolomeo.
Germagno lies on the side of the Valle Strona facing the Cusio, and two explanations run about its name: some take it as a memory of Walser highlanders who crossed Monte Massone from Ornavasso, others trace it to germen magnum, the plentiful sprouting of the fields and pastures around the old village. It is named, with Loreglia and Luzzogno, in an agreement of 1221; through the Middle Ages its fortunes stayed tied to the lords of Crusinallo.
In 1397 the long quarrel with Omegna over the boundary between the two territories was settled, and the parchment that closed it is the oldest document in which a village of the valley appears as a comune. Of the old building habits, stacked tiers of loggias remain, the most notable example being the so-called Cajascia. The church of San Bartolomeo, with its bell tower, later took its two-nave form; the arms carry a black eagle on gold and an uprooted stump with a six-leaved branch.
