Cellio con Breia

Province: Vercelli · Region: Piedmont · Population: 1,027 · Postal code: 13024

Cellio con Breia was born on the first day of 2018, when Cellio and Breia, in the lower Valsesia, merged after a favourable referendum. The comune has no single centre: it is a scatter of hamlets on the slopes, from Castagneia to Valmonfredo. Above them rises Monte Briasco, 1185 metres, whose position made it the hub of the partisan fight in the valley; in 1943 a group of former English prisoners, turned partisan volunteers, was placed at Agaria.

At Cellio the parish church of San Lorenzo stands at the top of the village, reached by a stairway between retaining walls; the stone bell tower, with its clock and open belfry, rises clear of the roofs.
