Quarona

Province: Vercelli · Region: Piedmont · Population: 4,246 · Postal code: 13017

The tree on Quarona's arms is gone: it was an enormous beech, in the Vico quarter at the foot of Monte Roncacci, famous throughout the valley and visible from far off. It stood until 1886; villa Vallana is on the spot now. The blue band on the arms is the Sesia.

The main street carries the name of Pietro Rolandi, who in the nineteenth century opened a bookshop in London frequented by figures of the day, Giuseppe Mazzini among them. In 1928 Quarona and Doccio were joined to Borgosesia; Quarona later took its autonomy back, and Doccio has stayed on as one of its hamlets.
