Crova

Province: Vercelli · Region: Piedmont · Population: 410 · Postal code: 13040

Crova lies in the rice plain around Vercelli, where rice is not one crop among others: it covers more than 95% of the usable farmland. The village arms say something else — a silver Latin cross on red above, a goat walking on green ground below, and beneath the shield a scroll reading Municipium Crovae. In Piedmontese the place is Cròva and its people Crovatin.

At the edge of the village stands the church of the Santissima Vergine Annunciata: a portico of three arches on stone piers, an octagonal tiled roof with an iron cross on the ridge, the plaster fallen away in patches, bare brick underneath. The fields come up to its walls.
