Sali Vercellese

Province: Vercelli · Region: Piedmont · Population: 114 · Postal code: 13040

Sali Vercellese lies in the low plain right of the Sesia, on ground almost without relief, shaped by rice fields and a dense network of canals. The name comes from the Lombard sala, the manorial country house surrounded by its farm buildings: the description of a settlement rather than a place name. The village is first recorded in 996.

Three years later an imperial diploma confirmed it to Leo, bishop of Vercelli; in the thirteenth century the diocese handed village and castle to the abbey of San Benedetto di Muleggio, and long feuds among local families followed. The castle had probably begun as a ricetto, a shelter for the harvest, and in the seventeenth century, its defensive role gone, became a farmstead. Until 1864 the municipality was called simply Sali.
