Tronzano Vercellese

Province: Vercelli · Region: Piedmont · Population: 3,558 · Postal code: 13049

For centuries there were two Tronzano side by side: in Roman times Viculus and Alter Viculus, each with its own parish church, San Pietro and Santa Maria. Under the Lombards the first was taken by the conquerors, who followed Lombard law, while the other was left to the Italo-Romans, owners of the soil, who followed Roman law.

The name appears as "loco torencjano" in a land exchange of 969 between bishop Ingone and one Adalfredo known as Buono di Tronzano. After the guelph and ghibelline wars destroyed one of the two boroughs, the survivors of both obtained to refound themselves together as a new free borough, by an act of 12 February 1256.
