San Germano Vercellese

Province: Vercelli · Region: Piedmont · Population: 1,768 · Postal code: 13047

The village is named after Germain of Auxerre, the French bishop who is its patron. Tradition has it that the coffin with his body, on its way from Ravenna to France, passed through here on 31 July 448; at the edge of the village they keep the stone he is said to have sat on.

The Via Francigena runs through too, and along it, in 1159, a small hospital called San Giacomo was founded for pilgrims heading to Rome. Of the castle, taken in 1476 by Galeazzo Maria Sforza, one tower survives, perhaps the keep, now a bell tower near the parish church, the old Corpus Domini oratory beside it.
