Scopello

Province: Vercelli · Region: Piedmont · Population: 402 · Postal code: 13028

Scopello sits on the floor of the Valsesia, at about 660 metres, along the Sesia. Its name comes from the Latin scopa, a plant whose twigs served for sweeping; in Walser the village is Skuppil. It first appears in a document of 1217, ratifying the valley's submission to the commune of Vercelli.

From the eighteenth century the name was tied to a foundry in the Val Barbina, opened by leave of King Charles Emmanuel III and bearing the inscription Fondine di S.M. Above the village, the Alpe di Mera was a summer pasture of the counts of Biandrate. The parish church of the Assumption has stone-slab roofs and a lantern belfry.
