Feast of San Vittore
📅 Every year, on 8 May and on the second Sunday of May
On 8 May and on the second Sunday of May Asigliano Vercellese, a municipality of 1,401 inhabitants in the province of Vercelli, celebrates its patron San Vittore.
The village began as a Roman estate, the Fundus Acilianus of an owner named Acilius. Then came the castle, and Asigliano became a place worth taking: the marquises of Monferrato stormed it, Amedeo VIII had it fortified again, and perhaps by the sixteenth century it was gone. What little remained probably went in 1818, with the new church front.
All that survives is the retaining wall under Santa Maria Assunta: the church stands atop the ramp, with its white columned porch and the brick bell tower behind the pediment. The village had already paid dearly in 1536, sacked by imperial troops for rebelling against Duke Carlo III; pardon came only in 1545.
