Rovasenda

Province: Vercelli · Region: Piedmont · Population: 979 · Postal code: 13040

Rovasenda lies wholly in the Baraggia, the high plain of Vercelli: flat ground, tilted slightly north to south, some ten kilometres long and barely five across. Rice fields surround it, and the main irrigation channel, the Roggia del Marchese, brings water from the Sesia. There are no hamlets: outside the village only isolated farmsteads stand among the flooded fields.

The castle sits in the middle of the village, dating from the tenth century and keeping the tower they call millenary; the new castle is a twentieth-century work by Carlo Nigra. The arms come from the Di Rovasenda lords: a gold lion on red beneath a gold chief with a black crowned eagle.
