Feast of Saint James
📅 Every year, on 25 July
On 25 July San Giacomo Vercellese, a municipality of 329 inhabitants in the province of Vercelli, celebrates its patron Saint James (San Giacomo).
The village changed its name in 1964, when Cascine San Giacomo became San Giacomo Vercellese, and the old name's meaning went with it: the place had grown out of a handful of farmsteads, the cascine, on the left bank of the Rovasenda, a torrent from the heights of Sostegno and Curino. Earlier still it was known as Cascine di Rovasenda, after the fief it belonged to.
Until the early seventeenth century it had no political autonomy, and its story was that of the Rovasenda fief. In 1621 Charles Emmanuel I of Savoy granted Cascine San Giacomo, with the title of count and along with Albano and Oldenico, to the marquis Mercurino Carlo Antonio di Gattinara. The arms set side by side Saint James with the palm of martyrdom, the red cross of Vercelli and a rice plant in leaf and ear.
