Some fifteen hundred trulli in a single town: Alberobello has been UNESCO-listed since 1996 because nowhere else did dry-stone building with limestone-slab domes produce an entire urban centre. Tradition says the grey stone cones — their whitewashed symbols painted on the roofs — were designed to be dismantled quickly whenever the Kingdom's tax collectors approached.
The Rione Monti district is the postcard; the Trullo Sovrano is the only two-storey one. The right moment is late afternoon, when the coaches pull out and the trulli go back to being homes.
