The name says it all: locus rotundus, the round place. Seen from above, Locorotondo is a near-perfect circle of white houses with pointed "cummerse" roofs — the pitched limestone-slab coverings you don't expect in Puglia — and seen from inside it is an embroidery of flowered balconies and lanes polished by the evening stroll.
It ranks among Italy's most beautiful villages and makes one of the region's historic whites, Locorotondo DOC, in the valley's cellars. From the public gardens, the belvedere embraces the Itria Valley and its scattered trulli: the right hour is sunset, cold glass in hand.
