Gioia del Colle

Province: Bari · Region: Puglia · Population: 27,889 · Postal code: 70023

Sitting 360 metres above sea level on the Murge plateau, this Apulian town was officially known simply as Gioia until 1863. Today, locals still refer to the municipality by its distinct dialect name, Sciò.

Gioia del Colle and its nearly 27,900 residents occupy a stretch of land bridging the Adriatic and Ionian seas. Historically, the town served as the administrative headquarters for the south-eastern Murge mountain community.
