Feast of Maria Santissima Addolorata
📅 Every year, on 9, 10 and 11 August
On 9, 10 and 11 August Poggiorsini, a municipality of 1,418 inhabitants in the province of Bari, celebrates its patroness Maria Santissima Addolorata.
The village has changed its name three times, and each name says who was in charge. In a Norman document of 1197 it is Mons Folicatus, the mount of foliage, after the scrub that covered the heights; then it becomes Macchia Vetrana, which says the same thing; in 1609, when the fief passes to the Orsini, it starts being called Poggio degli Orsini. It was they who made a real village of it: in the eighteenth century they built the ducal palace, the church of the Seven Sorrows, the cemetery, the mill, the bakehouse and the slaughterhouse.
Self-government, on the other hand, came late and had to be waited for. When feudalism fell in 1808, Poggiorsini was demoted to a hamlet of Gravina in Puglia and remained one for a hundred and forty-nine years, until 1957. Today it is the least populated and least densely settled comune in the whole metropolitan area of Bari, and it lies inside the Alta Murgia National Park: in its fields, among wheat, vines and olives, more than fifty species of wild orchid have been counted.
