Centuries-old olive trees, traditional trulli, and karst caves define the rural landscape around Ceglie Messapica, a Salento town of 20,209 residents. The medieval historic core rests on a hill that once served as the pre-Roman acropolis for the ancient settlement of Kailia. Interestingly, the municipality was known simply as Ceglie until 1864.
Whitewashed buildings and narrow alleys paved with local "chianche" slabs characterize the older neighborhoods. Walking through this historic center reveals a visual continuity with the surrounding Brindisi countryside, where fortified agricultural estates, known as masserie, stand as enduring monuments to the region's farming heritage. The almond biscotto cegliese, a Slow Food Presidium, has made the town a quiet food capital of the Salento.
