Grottaglie's ceramics quarter is unique in Italy: dozens of workshops dug into the ravine, where potters have turned for centuries the capasoni — giant wine jars — and the figurines of the Nativity. Walking among kilns and courtyards crowded with terracotta means entering a living trade, recognised among Italy's official ceramic cities.
Above the workshops, the Episcopio castle houses the ceramics museum; around town, ravines carve a landscape of table-grape vineyards. In December, the Nativity exhibition is the rite drawing collectors from across the South.
