Motta Montecorvino

Province: Foggia · Region: Puglia · Population: 768 · Postal code: 71030

Motta was born out of a dead town: when Montecorvino fell into ruin, in the fourteenth century, its people scattered over the surrounding hills and founded three new settlements, and this is one of the three. The bell tower of the arch-priest's church is Gothic, of 1447, and in all likelihood it is one of the towers of the old walls, transformed.

In the nineteenth century a good many local men joined the brigand bands that roamed these hills, and the thing had an unexpected effect: the village was spared the sackings that fell on the places nearby. In the Second World War the bell tower was used as a stronghold by the Germans, and between 1 and 3 October 1943 the first clash between the Canadians landed in Italy and the German army took place here.
