Feast of Maria Santissima della Sanità
📅 Every year, on the first Sunday of May
On the first Sunday of May Volturara Appula, a municipality of 481 inhabitants in the province of Foggia, celebrates its patroness Maria Santissima della Sanità.
The name is said to come from the Latin vultur, the vulture: the place of vultures. «Appula» was added to it by decree in 1862. Volturara was a bishop's city for centuries: it appears as early as a papal letter of 969, among the dioceses of Greek rite dependent on Benevento. Among its bishops was Alessandro Geraldini, who would become the first bishop of the New World and who died at Santo Domingo in 1525.
At the beginning of the sixteenth century the town was almost empty, and its feudal lady repopulated it with a colony of Provençals, probably from the Waldensian valleys of Piedmont: she granted them a Statute which, rediscovered in the twentieth century, scholars regard as strikingly liberal for its time. Half a century later, between 1563 and 1564, the inhabitants were subjected to an inquisitorial trial. In 1624 a private bequest founded here the first grain bank of the Kingdom of Naples.
