Volturino

Province: Foggia · Region: Puglia · Population: 1,781 · Postal code: 71030

Volturino stands at 735 metres, on one of the highest points of the Daunian mountains, and on clear days half of Apulia can be seen from here: the Tavoliere plain, the Adriatic with the Tremiti islands, the Gargano, the edge of the Murgia and, far off, Monte Vulture in Basilicata. It is also one of the coldest places in the region, with regular frosts and snowfalls. The name comes from the Latin volturinus, from voltur, the vulture — the same root as vulture, which here is the name of the south-west wind: a bird and a wind in the same word.

The village was born of a destruction: that of nearby Montecorvino, razed by the Norman king Roger II. And that lost city has stayed on the municipal arms, which carry three towers still standing in the territory — Capotorre, the tower of Tertiveri and the tower of Pietra, which is what remains of Montecorvino's cathedral. The comune also has a flag of its own: a white cloth with a green Turkey oak leaf in the middle.
