Saint Albert of Montecorvino, patron of the town
📅 Every year, on 16 May
Pietramontecorvino celebrates Saint Albert of Montecorvino on 16 May, with the Madonna di Costantinopoli as second patron on 18 August.
The village was called simply Pietra until 1862. In 1137 the people of Montecorvino took refuge here, a bishop's seat that Roger the Norman had destroyed: they settled in the caves of the tufa spur. The earthquake of 5 December 1456 finished the work, and no one was left at Montecorvino.
In 1337 the lord of Pietra was Carlo de Cabannis, son of a Moorish slave of the Neapolitan court who, once free, rose to be vice-seneschal of the Kingdom; in 1345 he was accused of plotting the murder of Andrew of Hungary, husband of Queen Joanna, and sentenced to death. In the ducal palace, on the vault of the great hall, the dukes' motto is still there: Duriora decoxi, I have broken harder things.
