Stornarella

Province: Foggia · Region: Puglia · Population: 5,022 · Postal code: 71048

Seventy-three families were sent here in 1774, and we know exactly what each of them got: a house, a patch of pasture, a pair of oxen and ten versure of land, against a rent of eighteen ducats. The villages of the Cinque reali siti made a poor start and became comuni only under Joseph Bonaparte: Stornarella on the first of May 1808.

Of the Jesuits' residence, which farmed the great estate around, there remains the seventeenth-century chapel out of which the parish church grew: the two side aisles and the dome are of the nineteenth century. In the apse hangs a canvas of 1614 copying the Salus populi romani of Santa Maria Maggiore, and at the Virgin's feet stand Ignatius of Loyola and Francis Xavier. Before all this, the plain was crossed by the sheep tracks of the transhumance.
