The origins of Orta Nova—known simply as Orta until 1862—remain a matter of historical debate. The name of this Apulian town of nearly 17,000 residents might derive from the Latin hortus (garden), a directional nod to the East, or even a translation of "crooked born" (ortus).
The settlement stretches across the southern edge of the Tavoliere, Foggia's expansive plain, sitting on the right bank of the Carapelle river. It lies approximately 25 kilometers from the provincial capital.
