Saint Elijah, patron of Peschici
📅 Every year, on 20 July
Peschici celebrates Saint Elijah on 20 July.
Peschici is said to have been founded by Slav soldiers: in 970, having driven the Saracens out on the orders of Otto I, a band of Schiavoni stopped here and raised the castrum of Pesclizio on the ruins of a casale the Saracens had destroyed. A deed of 1053 still recalls them; then the community dissolved into the village. The name too would be Slavic, from the root pès, sand.
In September 1239 twenty-five Venetian galleys, sent by the pope against the excommunicated Frederick II, took and levelled Peschici and Vieste; Frederick had the fortifications rebuilt. Between 1469 and 1586 the town appears on twenty-three charts and portolans, nearly all by Venetian geographers, and between 1550 and 1570 ships were built here for Ragusa: one, of two hundred and fifty carra, cost five hundred ducats.
