The white monolith of Pizzomunno — twenty-five metres planted in the beach — greets arrivals, along with the legend of the fisherman petrified for love who returns to life one night every hundred years. Vieste is the Gargano's seaside capital: an old town of stairways and arches on the headland, kilometres of sand on either side, and to the south the coast of trabucchi fishing platforms and sea caves explored by boat.
Behind it lies the Foresta Umbra — UNESCO-listed beech woods at the national park's heart — and the white towns of Peschici and Vico. Summer is packed, true: June and September are its best self.
