Feast of Santa Maria della Rocca
📅 Every year, on 15 August
On 15 August Casalnuovo Monterotaro, a municipality of 1,663 inhabitants in the province of Foggia, celebrates its patroness Santa Maria della Rocca with a procession.
There are two villages here, not one. Up above, five kilometres from the town, stands Monterotaro — the Mons Rotarius of the documents, named for the round shape of its hill — with the remains of its walls and a square tower of Lombard origin, and people still live there. Down in the valley lies the new hamlet, founded in 1466 by families who came from the opposite shore of the Adriatic. For centuries the comune bore the single name of Casalnuovo: the old hill returned to the official name only in 1862.
Here those who left count as much as those who stayed. Since 1996 the town has held the Festival of Welcome, a bridge thrown out towards its emigrants, which each year honours the townspeople who have made their mark elsewhere; since 2018 there has also been a festival of Balkan music and traditions, bringing back into the square the sound of the shore the founders came from. In the town stands the Bourbon fountain of 1834, a stone niche crowned by a pediment, with an invitation to use it carved above.
