Saint Roch, patron of Candela
📅 Every year, from 16 to 18 August
Candela celebrates Saint Roch from 16 to 18 August, with religious celebrations and musical events.
Here ends the drove road that comes from Pescasseroli: two hundred and eleven kilometres of grass track for the sheep coming down from Abruzzo. The town stands on two hills, between the Carapelle and the Ofanto. From 1531 to 1806 it belonged to the Doria, the Genoese family: Andrea Doria had been given it after the prince of Melfi was declared a traitor.
On 8 September 1902 the farm labourers were on strike. A cart of strike-breakers, escorted by carabinieri, set off a brawl; the soldiers fired on the crowd, and the peasants answered with stones. The brigadier, pursued, also shot four people who had nothing to do with it. By the end of the day there were eight dead, many wounded, and more than a hundred and eighty arrested.
