They call it the loggia of Apulia: from up here, on the Daunian mountains, you can see the Tavoliere as far as the gulf of Manfredonia, Monte Vulture, the uplands of Irpinia. The village grew in a spiral around its castle, and that castle mattered: on 5 October 1239 Frederick II placed it among the castra exempta, the castles so important that the emperor reserved the appointment of their castellan to himself, and he obliged the inhabitants of the whole justiciarate to keep it in repair. Charles I of Anjou, later on, kept a private apartment there.

In 1396 the viceroy summoned to the castle a parliament of the barons of the Angevin party, and there, following the example of the Eight of the Good State of Naples, six deputies were elected for the Good State of the Kingdom. In 1576 Carlo Loffredo bought the lordship of Sant'Agata from the Orsini for thirty-six thousand ducats, and from then on the castle stopped being a fortress and became a residence. Until 1862 the municipality was called simply Sant'Agata; in that same year the castle was sold to a local family, the del Buono, and in 2000 the municipality bought it back by exercising its right of pre-emption.
