On 13 December 1250 Frederick II died here, in his domus at Castel Fiorentino, a frontier village founded by the Byzantines in 1018 and now reduced to ruins out in the fields. The story goes that a prophecy had foretold his death «sub flore», and he, who kept away from Florence, ended his days at Fiorentino.
Five years later the village was attacked by the pope's troops, and its people, together with those of Dragonara, took refuge under the Benedictine abbey of San Pietro: from that union Torremaggiore was born, named after the Norman tower inside the ducal castle. The earthquake of 30 July 1627 razed almost all of it. There are 17,365 residents.
