Serracapriola

Province: Foggia · Region: Puglia · Population: 4,069 · Postal code: 71010

Serracapriola stands on the royal tratturo from L'Aquila to Foggia, and from the transhumance it took both wealth and shape. The Capitanata earthquake of 1627, with the sea wave that followed it, almost levelled the town and killed hundreds; the rebuilding pushed it eastwards, and that design can still be read in the plan of the streets.

In the Capuchin convent, one of the oldest in Puglia, san Pio da Pietrelcina began his studies in theology in 1905: his room can be visited. On the first of October 1943 the Germans in retreat mined the roads, and the town rose and drove them out, at the cost of eleven dead. Until 1972 Serracapriola, though Apulian, depended on the Molise diocese of Larino.
