Historic capital of the upper Tavoliere plain, San Severo holds a record in the glass: its white was Puglia's first DOC wine, recognised in 1968, and the underground cellars dug beneath the centre tell centuries of winemaking. Above ground, the town is a small Baroque casket: twin churches, bell towers and palaces that earned it city-of-art status.
The Festa del Soccorso in May is among Italy's most pyrotechnic: firecracker "batteries" explode along the streets as the saints pass, amid crowds in yellow-and-red shirts. The Gargano and its beaches begin twenty minutes away.
