Feast of Santa Maria Assunta
📅 Every year, on 15 August
On 15 August Austis, a municipality of 876 inhabitants in the province of Nuoro, celebrates its patroness Santa Maria Assunta (Assumption of Mary).
Austis stands almost at the exact centre of Sardinia, and the name comes from the Latin: Augustis, or Forum Augusti. It was born as a stopping place on the Roman road that went from Caralis to Olbia by way of Forum Traiani, and it was a military station against the raids of the Barbaricini, whom Rome never managed to subdue entirely.
Out in the fields there is a granite rock shaped like a woman in traditional dress, and it is called Sa Crabarissa, the woman of Cabras. The legend says she had fallen in love with a shepherd from Austis met during the transhumance; tired of waiting for him she walked all the way up here and found him married to another. Going back down she turned to look at his village one last time, and grief turned her to stone.
