Noragugume

Province: Nuoro · Region: Sardinia · Population: 338 · Postal code: 08010

Noragugume lies between the Marghine range and Lake Omodeo, on hills of alluvial soil. Its old name was Nuracogomo, and the village belonged to the curatoria of Marghine in the judicate of Torres; when that judicate fell, in 1259, it passed for a short time to Arborea. How much older the settlement is, the menhir of Sa Perda 'e Taleri and the nuraghi of Tolinu and Irididdo, scattered through the territory, make plain.

The old centre is of the fifteenth century, and the little church of Santa Croce — Santa Rughe in Sardinian — is its clearest witness. The church the village is most attached to, however, is that of the Blessed Virgin of Itria, of 1623, built in that Catalan Gothic which reached Sardinia with the Aragonese and stayed for centuries. The three things that matter here have all ended up on the coat of arms: the church, a sheep for the pastoral life, and the uprooted tree that was the badge of the judicate of Arborea from the thirteenth century.
