Aidomaggiore

Province: Oristano · Region: Sardinia · Population: 472 · Postal code: 09070

The old name was Aidu, which in Sardinian means gap, entrance: it appears as villa de Aidu in the peace treaty of 1388 between Eleonora of Arborea and John I of Aragon. Under the Spanish it became Aido mayor, the greater entrance, and from that Italian made Aidomaggiore. The language, too, is in transit here: the speech of the village is the limba de mesania, the middle tongue between the two great varieties of Sardinian.

When the giudicato of Arborea fell in 1420, Aidomaggiore passed to the Aragonese and ended up in the Incontrada of Parte Ocier Reale, but with a difference from the villages around it: it was a royal fief, administered directly by officials of the Crown and not by a baron, and in 1839 it was bought out from the state, not from a family. In the countryside there remain well-preserved nuraghi, domus de janas and the giants' tomb of Iscralotze; in the village the parish church of Santa Maria delle Palme is of the sixteenth century, and the church of San Gavino is Romanesque.
