Feast of Saint Anthony the Abbot
📅 Every year, on 17 January
On 17 January Silanus celebrates its patron Saint Anthony the Abbot; the town also celebrates Saint Mary Magdalene on 22 July and Saint Sabina in the second week of September.
Silanus stands on a hill of the Marghine range, and its coat of arms says more than a guidebook: in the upper half is the church of Santa Sabina and beside it, on the same green field, the nuraghe that carries the same name. A sacred well opens nearby. On a single patch of ground stand a church, a Bronze Age tower and a prehistoric cult spring, and the village chose exactly that coexistence as its own image.
In the Middle Ages Silanus belonged to the giudicato of Torres and to the curatoria of Montiferru; when the giudicato fell it passed to Arborea and then to the marquisate of Oristano, until the final defeat of the Arboreans at Macomer in 1478. Under the Aragonese it entered the Incontrada of Marghine, which the House of Savoy turned into a marquisate, a fief of the Pimentel and then of the Tellez-Giron, bought out in 1839. In recent times the village has been studied by researchers from half the world for the longevity of its people: in 2004 National Geographic counted seven centenarians here, among them two brothers both aged a hundred and three.
