Sedilo

Province: Oristano · Region: Sardinia · Population: 2,216 · Postal code: 09076

Sedilo sits on the edge of the Abbasanta plateau, where the Tirso widens into Lake Omodeo, and every July the village runs the Ardia of San Costantino: a mounted procession launched at full gallop towards the sanctuary, re-enacting the battle of the Milvian Bridge. The rider of the first banner is Constantine, the pack chasing him is Maxentius's army, and the escorts are there to stop anyone overtaking. The parish priest picks the leader from a register kept in the church, in order of enrolment: the role is not won, it is waited for.

The village's feudal history contains one episode that tells itself. In 1416 the king of Aragon granted the Guilcier to Valore di Ligia, an Arborean who had betrayed judge Ugone III; when Valore and his son Bernardo came to take possession of the fief, the inhabitants of the two curatorie killed them at Zuri along with their escort. The fief later passed to the Requesens, to the Torresani, and in 1726, once that family died out, to the royal demesne: for some years Sedilo had officials rather than masters. It became a county again, then a marquisate, and was finally bought out in 1839.
