Saint Sebastian, patron of Tertenia
📅 Every year, on 20 January
Tertenia celebrates Saint Sebastian on 20 January.
Tertenia has 3,815 inhabitants at a hundred and twenty-nine metres, in the valley of the Quirra, between Monte Ferru and Monte Arbu, with twelve kilometres of coast. The name is pre-Latin and has no certain origin: it is set beside the nomen Tertilli of a local inscription, beside the Gallurese Telti, and further off beside the Illyrian Tertaus and the Albanian tertë, which means hard, dry.
The territory, barely a hundred and seventeen square kilometres, holds 77 nuraghi, 22 Nuragic villages, 34 giants' tombs and a sacred well: a density that tells how many people lived here in the Bronze Age. In the Middle Ages Tertenia was the chief town of the curatoria of the Sarrabus; when the Giudicato of Cagliari fell in 1258 it passed to Gallura, then to Pisa, then to the Aragonese. In the eighteenth century, south of the village, two whole settlements disappeared, Ullu at the foot of the castle of Quirra and Tovuda Billamonti. On the coast stands the seventeenth-century tower of San Giovanni di Sarrala.
