Modolo

Province: Oristano · Region: Sardinia · Population: 165 · Postal code: 09090

Modolo is the smallest municipality in Sardinia by area, and its name seems to say so: it may come from the Latin modulus, a small measure, but also from the way the people of these valleys caught and channelled the water of the springs. In Roman times Modulo Vallis stood here, on the road that ran along the island's western coast and led as far as Porto Torres.

In the seventh century Byzantine monks settled here, brought Christianity and raised the church of Sant'Andrea, still the parish church today; the saint is celebrated twice, in May through the streets and in November in church. The hills around are vines and cherry trees: this is Malvasia di Bosa country, and one of the village churches is dedicated to the Madonna of the Grape.
