Magomadas

Province: Oristano · Region: Sardinia · Population: 643 · Postal code: 09090

The name is Phoenician: Macomades, from the Semitic maqom hadash, «new place», the same name that recurs in many ancient settlements along the coasts of the western Mediterranean. The village stands high on the Planargia, and from the belvedere the coast can be seen from Cuglieri to Bosa and Alghero.

The coat of arms carries a line of Horace: praeter omnes angulus meus ridet, that corner of earth smiles on me more than any other. The corner, here, is planted with vines: the malvasia of Magomadas has a wine museum of its own. The village was a fief from 1464 and was redeemed in 1839; in 2003 it passed from the province of Nuoro to that of Oristano.
