Montresta

Province: Oristano · Region: Sardinia · Population: 535 · Postal code: 09090

The founders came from Oitylo, in Laconia: Maniots, Greeks, beaten by the Turks in 1669. Genoa gave them asylum in Corsica, at Paomia; then, in 1731, the Corsicans rose against Genoa, the Greeks would not join them, and the rebels burned their village. They took refuge in Ajaccio, where they stayed some fifty years.

In 1746 about fifty families negotiated with the Savoyard government, and Charles Emmanuel III gave them a piece of the Planargia behind Bosa: from 1751 they built San Cristoforo di Montresta there. Bosa claimed those lands and made life hard for the settlers. One of the Greek families, the Passerò, who were originally called Psaròs, is still there.
