In 1436 the Aragonese took the Doria castle after a siege that had lasted three years, and Alfonso the Magnanimous had it dismantled along with the village. The inhabitants split: some went off to the nearby villa of Monteleone — the place now called Villanova Monteleone — and some stayed here to rebuild the village on the rock.
Of the castle the ruins remain, and below opens the lake of the Temo. This is the least populous comune in the province of Sassari and the second in all Sardinia, after Baradili: two tiny villages, one in the north-west and one in the centre of the island. The Sardinian spoken here is northern Logudorese.
