Siris

Province: Oristano · Region: Sardinia · Population: 224 · Postal code: 09090

The name Siris reads the same in both directions: it is one of five Italian municipalities with a palindrome for a name, along with Ala, Ateleta, Onano and Orero. In piazza San Vincenzo, beside the church, grows a thousand-year-old olive tree that is the village's emblem: the story goes that it guards the saint's treasure among its roots, and that the treasure will go to whoever has a pure faith, while it will be the ruin of anyone who tries to take it undeservedly.

The church of San Vincenzo, out in open country, had been pulled down during the Second World War and left abandoned for years; it was consecrated again in 2000, and a relic of the saint was brought there for the occasion. The municipality too disappeared and came back: abolished in 1927 and merged into Masullas and Pompu, it was re-established in 1961. In spring the village holds its dairy fair, with a contest for throwing a wheel of cheese.
