Ulà Tirso

Province: Oristano · Region: Sardinia · Population: 580 · Postal code: 09080

The coat of arms of Ula Tirso, granted in 1962, has neither saints nor towers: it shows a dam on the Tirso, drawn in perspective from the south-west. The river also gave the village the second half of its name, added later: before, it was simply Ula.

The calendar is crowded: in January Saint Anthony with the bonfire and the bread cun gherdas, at Carnival the masks of s'urtzu and sos bardianos, at Easter s'iscravamentu — the taking down of Christ from the cross, which the Catalans called desclavament, unnailing — with the night procession. In 1996 the village built itself a country church for Saint Isidore on land given by a man of Ula who had emigrated to the province of Verona. In August comes the emigrant's feast.
